How to Use a V2H Charging Station
To use a V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) charging station, you need a compatible vehicle and a bidirectional charging system with an associated meter and transfer switch. To use it, plug your vehicle into the V2H charging station, which intelligently distributes power to the vehicle, your home, or both. During a power outage, the system isolates itself from the grid and uses the vehicle's battery to power your home or building.
Vehicle-to-Home (V2H)
V2H refers to the use of electric vehicles with bidirectional charging capabilities to power a home or building during a power outage or emergency. The vehicle's battery acts as a backup power source, providing power to the home and the system until grid power is restored.
V2H technology enables electric vehicle owners to integrate their vehicles into their home energy management system, enhancing energy resiliency and self-sufficiency.
How to Use a V2H System
Ensure your setup is compatible: You must have a V2H-compatible electric vehicle, a bidirectional charger, and an energy meter installed at your home's electrical panel. An automatic transfer switch is also required to enable backup power.
Connect Your Vehicle: Plug the charger into your electric vehicle. The system is designed to automatically manage the flow of power, so no special steps are required beyond plugging it in.
Manage Power Flow: The system will monitor your home's energy needs and, depending on your needs and time of day, use your car's battery to power the house or charge your car.
Enable Backup Power (during a power outage): The transfer switch will detect a grid outage and disconnect your home from the grid, allowing the V2H system to power your home using the electric vehicle's battery.
Control Settings: You can typically use a mobile app to monitor power flow, set preferences for car powering the house, and receive notifications.
