Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche finally commit to using Tesla’s NACS plug

Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche finally commit to using Tesla’s NACS plug

According to InsideEVs, Volkswagen Group announced today that its Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and Scout Motors brands plan to equip future vehicles in North America with NACS charging ports starting in 2025. This marks the beginning of a transition period for Volkswagen Group’s CCS 1 standard in North America, unlike Ford and General Motors, which will begin adapting to NACS charging ports in 2024.

Unlike brands like Ford and GM, which will adapt to NACS charging ports starting in 2024, existing models like Volkswagen, Porsche and Audi will need to explore NACS adapter solutions to access Tesla’s network of more than 15,000 Supercharger stations starting in 2025.

From CCS1 to NACS. Not all Volkswagen Group vehicles will be equipped with NACS ports; only new models will be. Existing models will continue to use CCS1 until they are updated. The 2025 ID.7 will also use CCS1 ports, likely because final production engineering for this new model has already been finalized.

Specific details include:
Standard Adoption Timeline:
Volkswagen Group’s new electric vehicles will directly adopt Tesla’s NACS standard starting in 2025.
Adapter Solution:
Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche are also developing adapter solutions with the goal of launching an adapter solution in 2025 that will allow existing electric vehicle owners to use Tesla’s Supercharger stations.

Compatibility:
This agreement means that Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche electric vehicles will be able to directly access Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network, improving charging convenience.

Industry Trends:
This move marks Volkswagen Group joining other major automakers in accepting Tesla’s NACS as an industry standard.
