The ultimate goal of V2G is not charging, but restructuring the power grid – when Europe began to mandate bidirectional charging, the real reshuffle of the charging pile industry began
In the past few years, V2G (Vehicle to Grid) has been the most “familiar yet unfamiliar” technology in the new energy industry. Everyone knows about it. But almost no one truly believes that it will land on a large scale. Because V2G in the past was more like a laboratory project, more like a policy demonstration, more like an industry PPT, it was difficult to truly form a commercial closed loop. So many people began to assume that V2G is important, but it is still far from reality.
But starting from 2024, the underlying logic of the entire industry is suddenly changing. Because driving V2G is no longer just about car companies. But rather – the global power grid system itself. Essentially, the outbreak of V2G is not the result of the development of new energy vehicles, but an inevitable product of the global energy structure imbalance.
The logic of the power grid in the past century is very simple: how much electricity is generated, how much electricity is used, and the entire system is centralized power generation – one-way transmission, stable load.
All of these are causing unprecedented problems in the global power grid, with “more and more electricity, but more and more difficult to dispatch.” Especially in Europe, negative electricity prices have become increasingly frequent. In many areas, there is even a phenomenon of excess electricity during the day and insufficient electricity at night.
The Shift: EVs as Distributed Energy Nodes
The biggest problem with the current global power grid system is the lack of dynamic energy storage. So, the entire energy industry began to re-examine a once overlooked resource – electric vehicles, which are gradually evolving from “transportation vehicles” to “grid assets”.
When million level EVs are connected to the energy system, what really changes is no longer the charging industry. But rather, the operation mode of the entire power system. That’s also why in the past two years, the global energy industry has suddenly begun a comprehensive shift:
- V2G (Vehicle to Grid) | V2H (Vehicle to Resident) | V2B (Vehicle to Commercial)
- VPP (Virtual Power Plant) | DER (Distributed Energy) | Microgrid
Global Regulatory Dynamics
Because in the future, what is truly valuable is no longer ‘who can generate electricity’. But rather: who can adjust the electricity. The global regulatory authorities have begun to enforce V2G, and it has never been the technology that truly determines the industry’s entry into the commercialization stage. But rather – regulations.
Europe: The Most Radical Promoter
The EU is forcing the promotion of intelligent charging systems through the AFIR (Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation). Starting from 2026, new public charging facilities must support ISO 15118; starting from 2027, new public and private Mode 3 charging facilities must support ISO 15118-20.
North America: Unified Energy Ecosystem
With the comprehensive promotion of SAE J3400 (NACS) standards, a unified charging ecosystem is forming. The true ultimate goal of a unified interface is not just to improve charging compatibility, but building a unified energy exchange network incorporating intelligent scheduling and bidirectional capability.
China: Large Scale Pilot Programs
In 2024, the National Development and Reform Commission and other departments promoted the “Notice on Promoting the Pilot Work of Large scale Application of Vehicle Network Interaction”. China has begun to incorporate V2G into the next generation of energy infrastructure.
The Future: Energy Internet
The next round of industry wars is no longer the “war of charging piles”. The truly valuable enterprises in the future may no longer be “hardware sellers”. But rather: aggregators, EMS companies, energy SaaS, VPP platforms, microgrid operators, bidirectional energy dispatch platforms.
Business Landscape: The current application status of V2G technology. The commercialization process of V2G in Europe is advancing faster than many people expected. In October 2024, Mobilize in France partnered with The Mobility House to launch the first commercial V2G service. In June 2025, We Drive Solar in the Netherlands launched the “Utrecht Charging” program. In August 2025, Octopus Energy has partnered with BYD to launch the V2G plan in the UK. In September 2025, BMW and E.ON launched Germany’s first residential V2G product.
There may not be much time left for the industry. In the past, the industry could still discuss whether V2G has a future? But now the real problem has become: when regulations begin to mandate support for two-way energy exchange, who can continue to stay in the traditional charging era?
