CHAdeMO is a fast direct-current (DC) electric vehicle charging standard created in Japan, mainly used by older Nissan Leafs, Mitsubishi Outlanders, and select Asian models. It is gradually being phased out globally in favor of the Combined Charging System (CCS) and NACS standards.
CHAdeMO is a fast direct current (DC) charging standard originating from Japan, primarily used for older models like the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi Outlander, as well as certain Asian vehicles. What is the function of a CHAdeMO charger?
It is a connector specifically designed for high-power DC charging, which is why you won't find it on the wall-mounted chargers commonly seen at home. The batteries in electric vehicles operate on DC power, meaning the charger can directly supply high-power current to the battery without requiring an onboard charger to convert AC to DC.
CHAdeMO is one of the earliest connector types, jointly developed by Japanese industries and automakers in the early 21st century, thus undergoing thorough practical testing. As a result, it is primarily used in Japanese models such as the Nissan Leaf, Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and Lexus UX 300e. Occasionally, some electric vehicles without a CHAdeMO interface can also be utilized with adapters, such as the Tesla Model S and Model X.
Key Features: Power Output: Typically delivers 50 kW to 62.5 kW at public charging stations, with subsequent technical specifications supporting up to 400 kW. Wired Plug: All public CHAdeMO charging stations provide connecting cables and large locking plugs; no need to bring your own cable. Bidirectional Power Supply: Enables efficient Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) energy transfer.
Compatibility and Status: Supported models: Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Lexus UX 300e. Newer electric vehicles use CCS or NACS interfaces. Incompatibility: CHAdeMO plugs cannot be directly connected to CCS or North American Charging Standard (NACS) interfaces and require a dedicated, rare adapter.

- What does CHAdeMO stand for?
Developed jointly by Japanese companies Nissan, Mitsubishi, Toyota, ES Automotive, and Tokyo Electric Power Company, it's no surprise that its name reflects its origins.
The word "CHAdeMO" comes from the Japanese phrase "CHArge de MOve," meaning "charging while moving." It also cleverly borrows from the Japanese phrase "O cha demo ikaga desuka," meaning "to drink tea while charging."

Which electric vehicles use the CHAdeMO interface?
Electric vehicles using the CHAdeMO fast charging standard are primarily Japanese models and early Asian or European models, most notably the Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and Mitsubishi i-MiEV.
Main CHAdeMO Models
Nissan Leaf: The most common all-electric vehicle globally using the CHAdeMO interface.
Nissan e-NV200: An electric van using the Leaf's powertrain.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: One of the few plug-in hybrid vehicles equipped with DC fast charging.
Mitsubishi i-MiEV (and its siblings that meet this standard, such as the Citroën C-Zero and Peugeot iOn).
Kia Soul EV (first generation, as of 2019).
Lexus UX 300e and some regional models, such as the Subaru Solterra (Japanese market).
Adapter Compatibility
Tesla Model S and Model X: Older Tesla models can use the Tesla-specific CHAdeMO adapter for traditional fast charging, but supply is limited.
What is a CHAdeMO Charging Station?
CHAdeMO is an electric vehicle connector that provides fast charging and is popular in fast charging stations. While a typical home charging station provides 7kW of power, a CHAdeMO charging station offers significantly higher power, up to 400kW.
On a Nissan Leaf, the CHAdeMO connector can charge from 20% to 80% in just 60 minutes. This is ideal for fast charging on the go and perfect for long trips.
How Does a CHAdeMO Connector Work?
The CHAdeMO connector uses direct current (DC) to power the car battery and converts the charging station's alternating current (AC) to DC. The UK National Grid provides AC, so an AC converter is needed for electric vehicle charging.
If you choose to charge using a standard household AC charger, the vehicle itself will perform direct current (DC) conversion. It uses a rectifier to convert AC power to DC power that the vehicle can use.
Choosing a CHAdeMO connector, which can perform this conversion itself, means faster charging.
